abstract = {Tetrahydroberberine (THB) 80-100 mg/kg (ip) produced a marked catalepsy in rats and mice. The catalepsy lasted longer than 2 h, while the peak effect occurred at 15-30 min. It was diminished by apomorphine or DA-precursor, l-dopa, but was enhanced by physostigmine. THB-induced catalepsy was selectively antagonized by scopolamine. In addition, GABA-ergic or opiate-ergic system appeared to have no effect on the catalepsy. The relevance of dopaminergic and M-cholinergic effects to THB-induced catalepsy was very similar to their relevance to the catalepsy induced by haloperidol, a dopamine receptor blocker. Thus, it is suggested that THB-evoked catalepsy may result from the decreasing activity of dopaminergic function.},
