abstract = {InstituThe respiratory depression induced by the organophosphorus cholinesterase inhibitor soman (pinacolylmethyl-phosphonofluridate) was studied in anesthetized and unanesthetized rabbits.
Under the conditions of artificial respiration and maintaining blood pressure by iv drip of noradrenalin, rabbits tolerated as much as more than 100 times the lethal dose of soman, and rhythmic phrenic discharges could still be recorded. Artificial respiration alone could not antagonize effectively the action of soman. Artificial respiration and atropine raised the tolerance of rabbits to soman to more than 50 times the lethal dose.
Topical application of soman (5 microg) onto the obex of medulla oblongata induced a respiratory enhancement initially and depression at last, accompanied by an abrupt fall in blood pressure.
If atropine was applied topically to the obex, respiration and blood pressure were improved, and the rabbits were exempted from death.
