Antagonism of antifertility effect of gossypol by aspirin
Abstract
In male rats, gossypol 15 mg/kg/d orally for 6 wks caused infertility and loss of motility of epididymal spermatozoa. These effects were antagonized when aspirin, a prostaglandin synthetase inhibior, 240-300 mg/kg/d was given together with gossypol, but aspirin did not decrease the acute toxicity of gossypol. It seems very tempting to postulate that stimulation of gonadal prostaglandin biosynthesis may be one of the mechanisms of the antispermatogenic action of gossypol.
