Effects of etorphine and electro-acupuncture on electroconvulsive shock in rats
Abstract
Seizures were induced by electroconvulsive shock (ECS) in 75 rats. Etorphine (ip) decreased seizure duration, its ED(50) being 11 microg/kg. Etorphine (icv) facilitated seizures with ED(50) 0.35 microg. These effects of etorphine were in a dose-dependent manner. Electroacupuncture (EA) inhibited partially the seizures; this inhibitory effect was reversed by ip naloxone. These results suggest that EA exerts the anticonvulsive action via endogenous opioid system.
